Mentoring

PURPOSE

To provide practical, honest advice, direction and encouragement to you, helping you grow as an artist in order to discover your own special creative voice.

MY PLEDGE

I will honestly evaluate your work, acknowledging your strengths and the areas needing improvement.  Then I will offer you clear, practical directions for improving your work. I will also encourage you and help you grow in understanding and confidence as you pursue your unique creative journey.

YOUR PLEDGE

You commit to being a serious student with a willingness to learn and accept critiques and suggestions in the spirit of learning. You will do assigned lessons to the best of your ability. My intention here is for me to advise and to evaluate your work. The amount of work you do is up to you. The more you do, the more you will benefit.

HOW IT WORKS

Each critique and mentoring session will be 30 minutes on either FaceTime or Zoom. Prior to our sessions you will send me your work via email as JPEGs  (maximum 1200 pixels, long dimension), which allows me time to evaluate your work and prepare for our next session.

By email, we shall agree on dates and times.  You will initiate the scheduling, which should be on a regular, consistent basis. Please be prompt, and honor the 30-minute limit.

All students entering the mentoring program must have my book “Secrets to Composition."

Prices not only reflect the time we will have together but also the time I will invest preparing for our meetings. These programs are only available in the United States.

TESTIMONIAL

"Barbara Nuss used her experience and knowledge to mentor me, via Zoom, on how I could fix areas in my paintings that weren't working. Her critiques are thoughtful and accurate.  Also, her book, 'Secrets to Composition,' contains a wealth of information on how to use design to create successful compositions in a step-by-step format. She includes pointers on color, value and more in her book. It is a great addition to any library. "  Jan O.

THE PROGRAMS

 ONE-TIME CRITIQUE

You may submit a maximum of two paintings via email (check specifications above) prior to a scheduled 30-minute phone critique. Before our time together, I will evaluate all aspects of the submitted work. I will address all areas in need of improvement and offer

specific advice and direction for overcoming areas of weakness.

 PERSONAL MENTORING PROGRAMS

Every aspect of your submitted paintings will be analyzed…concept, composition, drawing, value, edges, color, and technique. I will advise and give specific direction for improving problem areas. You have the option of reworking the existing painting or completing a new one with improvements.

I will not only advise and give specific direction for paintings you’re working on but you will receive help with those paintings where you may have unresolved problems.
